Software

Increase work productivity with online software that block your access to addictive and distracting websites.

Instead of writing a haiku poetry, you “tweet”.  In lieu of introducing yourself to someone, you “+1 Add Friend”.  You no longer watch funny movies on the big screen, you “LMAO” at viral videos on YouTube.  You can’t help but sneak in a quick “RT” or raise your thumbs up to “LIKE” or express yourself with a “comment”.  Admit it, you’re an addict.  And this form of addiction has greatly affected your productivity and focus on the more important pursuits of life--- like a doing your job, finishing your tasks, making a living...making friends, nurturing relationships, going on dates, bonding with family...

If the internet has somehow put you in dazed and distracted state,  the internet also offers antidotes that could help you curb your appetite for these online distractions.

This report from technology website, Mashable, says, “what’s better to fight a software addiction than software itself?

freedom
Recommended for those who want to quit cold turkey.  Touted as the “grandaddy of the Internet restriction programs”. This software can bar you from surfing the net for up to 8 hours at a time.  The $10 program is such a small price to pay for bringing back your productivity.

3. RESCUETIME
rescue time
This website gives it to you in-your-face.  At the end of the day, the software reads out your online web activities, making you realize how much of your time was spent on sites that steered you out of focus.

4. WRITE ROOM (for Mac)  and DARK ROOM (for PC)

write room

Getting a spell of writer’s block? Well, perhaps you should focus on nothing but --- writing!  The Write Room (for Mac) and the Dark Rom (for PC) are programs that allow you to use your PC only as a word processor for a certain period of time.

Now that’s what you call ‘getting a dose of your own medicine’. These apps could help save the day and get you a life -- a quality and productive one at that.

Got any other helpful tips on how to make your computer time more productive?

Digital technology paved the way for the rise of a new breed DIY (do-it-yourself) generation.  Digital natives or ‘handymans’ can tinker and maneuver their way around computer programs and software.  Instead of seeking professional services, a variety of computer software are now available to help get the job done.  Yet in these times of heavier costs and lighter wallets, everything comes with a price.  Computer software don’t come cheap.

But wait...there’s such a thing as a ‘free lunch’!  Digital technology has also paved the way for the rise of free and open source software alternatives.  Yes, you heard it right -- they’re FREE!

A website called Techsource, has compiled a list expensive software regularly used by ordinary folks like you and me, vis-a-vis their free counterparts:

The so-called generations of ‘baby boomers’ and ‘gen-Xers’ enjoyed recorded music in the form of LPs (long-playing records) and audiocassette tapes.  Through the years, the form of recorded music has evolved along with digital audio revolution.  Yet to this day, some of us still cling to those LPs or cassettes.  Yes, there is iTunes and other online music downloading portals with a vault of music from the classics and the long lost-obscure-one-hit wonders.  But for sentimentality’s sake, we’d still rather play our “own records”.

cassette tape LPs, records

All is not lost…the digital gods provided us tools in our computer that could save the day!  So before you discover that your kids have recycled your LPs into frisbees , or before your teenage child turns your cassette collection into a cassette tape art gallery --as inspired by the Bruno Mars music video, here’s a simple outline guide on how to preserve and enjoy your cassette and LPs in digital format.

This is derived from the series of articles from the APC Mag website apcmag.com, called “How To Rip Anything” by Jenneth Orantia and Mike Le Voi .

WHAT YOU NEED:

Audio Player

for a cassette tape player:

  • Connect Line Out of the cassette deck to Line In of the sound card

for LP turntables:

  • Connect turntable to amplifier
  • Line out / Tape out socket to sound card
  • For USB turntables, connect to USB port of the PC

Sound Card

  • USB sound card with multiple inputs is recommended

*for this purpose, the assumption is to use the motherboard sound card

  • Cable with 2 RCA jacks on one end, a stereo mini plug for the line-in socket of the sound card on the other end.
  1. Software options:
  • Multi-feature but pricey:  WAVELAB
  • Good and affordable:  REAPER, SOUNDFORGE
  • Freeware:  AUDACITY  Download Audacity from here.

Devices:

  • Choose your soundcard
  • Or use the built-in soundcard on your desktop

Quality:

  • 44,100Hz and 16-bit

Interface:

  • -60dB for ‘Meter/Waveform dB Range’

Import / Export:

  • Uncheck ‘Show Metadata Editor’

Keyboard:

  • change ‘Zoom In’ to Numpad8 and ‘Zoom Out’ to Numpad2
  • Set ‘Edit > Split’ to  ‘s’

Now you’re ready to CREATE A PROJECT:

audacity

Open Audacity:

  • Select ‘Edit > Save Project As’
  • Choose a name
  • Save AUP file in the directory for Audacity

Make a Test Recording:

  • Start playing the LP and press ‘Record’
  • Set levels to about -6 to -3dB
  • Right click speaker icon or use ‘Control Panel > Sound’
  • ‘Recording Tab’ – ensure that the default is set to the specific device used; then click ‘Properties’
  • ‘Listen Tab’: go to ‘Listen to this device’ for sound monitoring
  • ‘Levels tab’: right click ‘Line In’ slider to go to dB
  • Press ‘Stop’ when recording is done.

Check for DC offset
  • DC offset in recording results from sub par quality hardware.
  • Audacity can remove ‘noise’ by :
  1. Double-click the waveform and select ‘Effect > Normalize’
  2. Tick/check ‘Remove any DC offset’
  3. Uncheck ‘Normalize maximum amplitude’ (skip this if recording level are set correctly)
  4. Click ‘OK’

Saving The Recording

  • Save the project
  • choose ‘File > Export’.  Select ‘WAV (Microsoft)’
  • Name the file then save.

Delete unwanted silence:

  • Zoom in and zoom out for you to properly position the cursor one second before start of the music.
  • Press ‘s’ to split the recording
  • Double click on the parts of unwanted silence then ‘delete’

Add Track Markers:

  • Zoom in to waves and listen to the recording, then mark the starting points of each track use ‘Tracks > Add label at selection’ or press [Ctrl]+[B]
  • Edit label name replacing it with the song titles

Export the Album:

  • Use ‘File > Open Metadata Editor’ to enter artist name, album name, year, genre then press ‘Ok’
  • ‘File > Export Multiple’ to export the songs according to your preferred file format --.wav, .flac, .mp3, etc.

Whether as a student or business worker, suffering through the experience of being bored to death by a PowerPoint presentation is a fact life in the modern age. So much so, that it is now the topic of several books!! http://amzn.to/fVXuH9 Like most software solutions though, the most obvious use is not always the best one, and the biggest and the most popular programs aren’t always the greatest.

While PowerPoint certainly has its limitations, there is a lot that can be done with the software (and with how the speaker interacts with it) to turn an otherwise boring presentation into an engaging experience for the audience. In terms of alternatives, I’ve had the recent fortune to work with a group on a presentation using http://prezi.com/ (free for students, good value subscription options for businesses).

This week in our Twitter and Facebook feeds we’ll be looking at the various options for presentation software, plus tips on how to deliver the presentations to maximize audience engagement.
