Whether you are a technician or a DIY there are several reasons why you would want to install XP from a USB device like an external hard drive or a USB stick.

USB installs quicker than CD

Read / Write speeds are quicker on USB devices compared to CD drives. The actual speed increase is realised during the initial loading of the installation process and when the installation data is copied to the hard drive.

Create a backup of your original installation CD

You can create an unattended installation version of your original XP CD that already contains your product key, user name, computer name etc. This way when you perform the installation again then you wont be asked to fill in the above mentioned fields making the installation process much quicker.

Install XP when CD device is not working or present

Next time your CD device on your laptop or desktop box is faulty you have an alternative option to repair or reinstall XP using your USB installation disk.

Some Netbooks and small notebooks do not have inbuilt CD drives so your USB installation disk could be your only option if the recovery partition on the internal hard drive does not work.

Handy tool for computer technicians

If you are a professional computer technician then you will want to create different versions of Windows XP on a couple of USB devices. All you need is a 1GB USB sticks and you can pick them up for next to nothing these days.
