Your PC Matters Email Update: Fake Emails

Email is an easy form of communication. Email could also make you an easy target for scammers.

I recently received an interesting email from someone I did not recognise. What immediately caught my eye was the title, "We have found unclaimed money that belong to you Peter. $23,948", or something to that effect.

A part of me was thinking, 'Yeah right what a joke!' yet at the same time I felt a sudden rush of excitement. I continued to read on until I reached the last paragraph.
It read, "Please reply with your bank details so we will deposit your funds immediately." By now I was convinced that this email was a hoax. I watched my mouse arrow travel across the screen and bounce on the 'delete email' button and that was the end of that.

Now, what can you do to be sure whether an email is legitimate or hoax?

First of all, do not click on any links on a suspect email. It is not worth finding out the hard way while you think to yourself, "I wish I didn't do that".
Google the subject and the body contents of the suspect email.
If it is a hoax then you will find matching articles on the web with other people reporting hoax emails with similar content.
You can also check out http://www.hoax-slayer.com
This website has been around for a very long time and their database of hoax emails and other fake content is pretty conclusive. There are many useful tips and resources to be armed with knowledge.
