Troubleshooting Microsoft Office Errors

You may encounter many different types of error messages when you attempt to install Microsoft Office on your Windows computer. In this article, we are going to discuss a few such errors and the methods you can use to resolve them.

Error Message:

"Error 1402. Could not open key: key_name. System error 1009.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

In this error message, key_name refers to the key that Office Setup tries to write to your computer’s registry.

This error message is usually displayed when Office XP is being installed on Windows 98 or Windows ME, User Profiles is enabled on the computer, or the profile in use is corrupt.

You may use one of the following methods to resolve Office XP installation error 1402:

  • Check the Registry for Errors: You may use the Registry Checker tool—shipped with Windows 98 and Windows ME, or a reliable third-party registry cleaner tool to check and repair registry errors. You may also use the registry tools to clean up and optimize the Windows registry. After you are done, try to run the Office XP setup again.
  • Log on the system using a different user profile: To see if the errors are occurring due to a damaged user profile, log on using a different profile and then try to install Office XP.
  • Turn off User Profile: Open Control Panel and double-click on Passwords. Select All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings on the User Profiles tab and then restart your PC. After you are done, install Office XP on the PC.

Error Message:

"Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error(s):

The 2007 Microsoft Office system does not support upgrading from a prerelease version of the 2007 Microsoft Office system. You must first uninstall any prerelease versions of the 2007 Microsoft Office system products and associated technologies."

Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup.

This Office 2007 installation runtime error may occur during the installation of the original release of Office 2007 when one of the following software already exists on your computer:

  • An Office 2007 beta release version.
  • One or more components of Office 2007 beta release version.
  • One or more Office 2007 Beta release Add-ins.

To resolve this error message, you will have to first perform a complete Office 2007 uninstall of the prerelease version. To do this, perform the following steps:

Step 1: Use the Windows Add or Remove Programs tool or an efficient third-party program uninstaller to completely remove Office 2007 beta version, along with its components and add-ins from the PC.

Step 2: Use the msiexec.exe /x C:\WINDOWS\Installer\Office_2007_Installer_File NOREMOVESPAWN=1 command to remove all Office 2007 installer files that exist in the C:\WINDOWS\Installer folder.

Note: Here, C: represents the system root of your computer.

Step 3: Open the Services management console window by running the services.msc command, and stop the Office Source Engine service.

Step 4: Delete the following files from the given folder and then restart your system:

Folder Name Files/Folders To Delete
%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared Office12, Source Engine folders

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office Office12

All Root Drives of the Hard disk MSOCacher folders comprising Office)- in their names.

%appdata%\microsoft\templates Building blocks.dotx file

%temp% All Temporary files

%AllUsersprofile%\Application Data
\Microsoft\Office\Data

Opa12.dat
(Don’t delete Opa.bak)

Note: You can open all folders from Start > Run.

Step 5: Clean the registry keys of Office Beta release. You may choose to manually remove these keys or use a reliable registry cleaner tool to perform the task.
